The Felon got his first taste of real competition today at the Surf Club in Quogue. In tball no one strikes out or gets more than a single. In lacrosse they aren't really able to scrimmage yet. In karate he just needs to memorize moves to get the next belt, but in swimming there is a definite first, second third and fourth. He is so used to participation awards that I didn't realize I should have explained how racing goes. He didn't know that to win you had to touch the other wall first or that you should try breathing as quickly as you can to not waste time. As soon as his second (and last) race was over things clicked in his brain and he got back in line and was desperate to race again. He was the first heat so he didn't get to watch others do it and now that he knew what to do he wanted back in. It almost brought a tear to my eye because he has some very athletic genes in him, but you never know if your little will have a passion or drive to be competitive with it. He was a good sport and so proud of himself for racing 6 year olds and is counting down the days until he gets to compete again. If you are looking for a good sport for your 5 year old to teach them teamwork, competition, sportsmanship and most importantly how to be safe in a pool or ocean swimming is it.
